(EN)  Imagine that you can only take one hand-carried bag with you for the rest of your life, what would you bring? I met a Palestinian (stateless) refugee from Syria who was a fellow artist-in-residence when I visited Spain in November and December 2014 before returning to Italy and deciding on the methodology for the rest of this project. After weeks of sharing a studio, with him kindly chopping the wood for our fire stove, he finally told me his story: in order to avoid suspicion and getting gunned down at one of the military control points, he left Syria with his laptop computer and a duffel bag resembling what people might use for a two-day trip. In fact, I saw the totality of his possessions. He didn’t come to Europe to pursue the Mediterranean Dream. If his home had been somewhere where he could focus on making art instead of escaping from one hiding place to another, he said that he would have stayed. He said that his art work and the memory of his work were what he cared about most amongst his possessions. After more than two years, I still wonder how he is doing and what might have happened to his family in Syria. I remember having to fight back the tears as I felt that I had no right to cry in front of him. His was a relatively fortunate story of all the stories generated by this diaspora. Contrary to him, I have legal rights in various states. To some observers, I maybe seen as a self-imposed “fugitive” but what might I be fleeing from? Few people knew about this and I don’t consciously think about it: the 9th day of the 9th month of the lunar calendar is my Chinese birthday. In October 2016, as I was deep in my thoughts on my book and for months, I have thought of using “9_9” as my book’s title mainly to highlight what has been mentioned in Kong Yen Lin’s essay “Perfect Imperfection”, I received my dear father’s second happy birthday email of the year (the first one arrived on my western calendar birthday) which included a link on how the day known as “Double Nine”, a Chinese festival for thousands of years, is usually remembered and celebrated. For what I knew as a child, the legend was about villagers being warned of an epidemic, left their homes for the day by hiking up the mountains and then upon their return, they realised that they had just avoided a catastrophe (all the animals died). Regarding 9_9, I think of myself searching for something as opposed to fleeing from a particular thing. In either case, I have an urge to walk my walk. Thus, 9_9 symbolises my feet and my roots. Perhaps mine is not dissimilar to the experience of Patrick Zachmann (a Magnum Photographer based in France whose follow-up work in Hong Kong in June 2014 I had the fortune to assist); after a very intense seven-year project on Jewish Identity (Enquête d’identité ou Un Juif à la recherche de sa mémoire | Inquest on Identity or a Jew in Search of his Memory), he thought he needed to take a break and went to China, he thought that he was going far away, only to find that he was getting even closer to his own identity. In spite of the physical distance from where I was born or where my parents are, I have come closer to where I feel aligned with myself overall in Italy, while bringing with me the values and principles which I have been brought up with and still deem valid. I don’t lose what is inside me because I am far away from my physical origins. As such I would say that “real roots” are where I feel my essence. As I said in the interview with Fortunato D’Amico, I identify myself as a spirit in this body, not as this body with a spirit. So maybe there isn’t really a fixed physical place but a transcendental space that I truly belong to. The ingredients in our recipe for happiness are roughly the same 14 with different weightings. Like my long lost refugee friend, I value my artwork and the memory of it more than things that could usually be called “valuables”. The memory of works of art is not just what is in the computer hard drive but also the experience of creating them. What is truly valuable is what nobody can steal from us but can be shared. Now that I have created Project 9_9 it will hopefully become part of our collective memory, not just because I have created a new photographic language but also a different perspective to the existential questions we all ask from time to time. It does not mean that everyone should go take photographs with artists in Italy, but what I would hope is that everyone will care to look deeper into what makes them truly aligned with their own essence. I believe that if we could be more conscious of who we are and of our potential, our society would also benefit. As Carl Jung wrote,“a million zeros joined together do not, unfortunately, add up to one”, so we need to work on ourselves as individuals. As I further agree with him that we make our decisions strongly influenced by our unconscious, a storehouse of repressed memories specific to the individual and our ancestral and collective past, a few years of exploration can only uncover what might take a lifetime and beyond to be known. My first publication, Fragments of Grey Matter, started the process and here with Project 9_9, the exploration simply took shape in another place in a different visual form, and yet both have been inspired by the voice within me. This exploration has been enabled by a few favourable conditions and there is a long list of people to whom I am grateful and I am mentally going through each of your faces and names as I write this note – please see the “acknowledgements” section of this publication. Most directly, I thank all the artists who have been my guests on my journey, many of whom have also introduced me to other artists. Because of these encounters, I have widened my horizons: sometimes I felt great empathy towards certain creative pieces; at other times, I felt that I was getting to know someone or something that I had not seen and the meetings added food for thought. I hope that Project 9_9 will do the same for you. You can have a glimpse of their thoughts and artworks in my “treasure-box”, in the “Backstage” section, which opens with the symbol of The Third Paradise, authored by Michelangelo Pistoletto, essentially underlining the crux of this project: of the “We” in the middle of the three looped infinity sign made by “I” on one side and “You” on the other – thus, my DUAL self-portraits. It could be applied across individuals, disciplines and nations. Project 9_9 itself is a symbol of our multicultural and multidisciplinary living. To close, let me ask you the same question: imagine that you can only take one hand-carried bag with you for the rest of your life, what would you bring?
